The key to hitting the ball farther with the modern driver and golf ball (which spins much less off of a flat face than balls of the past) is high launch combined with a low spin rate. Our goal is to get enough spin to achieve lift, while minimizing (hopefully eliminating) drag.

There are a number of holes that must be played in a given order and a round of golf usually consists of eighteen holes that have to be played in an order as determined by the layout of the course. A nine-hole course would mean playing two successive nine-hole rounds. By playing the ball from a teeing box the player needs to put the ball into a hole in the green that is an area of finely cut grass. Stroking the ball into the hole is known as putting with the ball being hit along the ground. The idea is to rest the ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible in order to win the hole and there are many hazards along the way to contend with such as bunkers and water hazards.

An offset shaft or hosel on a putter is generally a good thing for a recreational golfer (and many pros, too). Offset helps the golfer line up with his or her forward eye over the ball, and with a good line of sight. Offset also helps keep the hands ahead of the ball when the putt is struck, which is a putting fundamental. Many putt great without offset, so it's one more thing that comes down to feel.

Open champion calls on Faldo to pick Monty

<p>If Nick Faldo is to ignore the wildcard claims of Colin Montgomerie for the Ryder Cup he will not only be working merely against the wishes of the majority of European supporters but also against that of The Open champion. Padraig Harrington yesterday added his weight to the "Pick Monty" campaign. And he did so with some gusto. "It is very important to get the balance in the team and now that I am in, I hope to tee it up with Monty in Valhalla in September," he said yesterday. "Of course, I would look forward to playing with anyone in the team but going back to the last couple of times I have played, I would certainly pick Monty."</p>

Tee the Ball Higher. The old adage has always been that the top of the driver should be about halfway up the ball when it is teed up. However, with a 460cc driver, I like to see you set the ball high enough on a peg such that the top of the driver is no more than one-third of the way up the ball. Of course, this means that the standard 2 1/8-inch tee will not be long enough to accommodate. You will need a tee at least 3 inches in length, but likely a little longer than this.

Golf Balls -- The Science Behind The Dimples
by Susan Chiang
The dynamics behind the flight of the golf ball offers a fascinating insight into the physical interworkings of air pressure, turbulence, and aerodynamics.
When golf was first played in Scotland, most players played using clumsy golf apparatus, with the first golf clubs and golf balls made of wood.
In 1618 the "Featherie" was introduced. It was a golf ball made of feather. This feather golf ball was handcrafted from goose feathers tightly pressed into a horse or cowhide sphere while still wet. After drying, the leather shrank and the feathers expanded, creating a hardened golf ball.
As this type of golf ball was specially handcrafted, it was usually more expensive than golf clubs, so that only a few privileged people could afford to play golf back then.
After the Featherie golf ball came the Guttie golf ball. This type of golf ball was made from the rubber-like sap of the Gutta tree found in the tropics, and was shaped into a sphere when hot and eventually into a golf ball. As it was made of rubber, the Guttie golf ball could be cheaply produced and easily repaired by reheating and reshaping.
Comparing the two types of golf balls, the Featherie golf ball was said to travel farther than the Guttie golf ball because the Guttie golf ball's smooth surface prevented it from covering more distance.
With this discovery, the developers of golf balls came up with the "dimpled" golf balls that are so predominant in modern golf nowadays.
The dimples on the golf balls help reduce the aerodynamic drag. Aerodynamic drag normally affects smooth golf balls and slows them down, because when they sail through the air, they leave a pocket of low-pressure air in its stir thus creating a drag.
By applying dimples to the golf ball surface, the pressure differential goes down and the drag force is reduced. These dimples create turbulence in the air surrounding the golf ball, which, in turn, forces the air to clasp the golf ball more closely. By doing so, the air trails the warp created by the golf ball towards the back instead of flowing past it. This results in a smaller wake and lesser drag.
Dimples were first added onto golf ball surfaces back during the gutta percha phase. Coburn Haskell introduced the one-piece rubber cored golf ball encased in a gutta percha sphere. Then in 1905 William Taylor applied the dimple pattern to a Haskell golf ball, thus giving rise to the modern golf ball as we know it today.
After its beginning, dimpled golf balls were officially used in every golf tournament. In 1921, the golf ball took its current form with standard size and weight. Nowadays there is a wide range of golf balls to fit every style, game and condition, with some golf balls offering control, and other golf balls offering distance.
Though a common sight nowadays, the dimpled golf ball is not just a mere element of the sports arena; it is a showcase of physics at work.

This is because the game requires an intense concentration and focus. Plus the game is played on a natural course laden with the beauty of nature.
One country that has truly elevated not only the game, but also the way a golf course should be. Ireland has been blessed with the many natural beauty of nature that has allowed it to be shaped and molded to golf courses that has indeed been a sight to see and a joy to play in.
With the hundreds of courses that are sprinkled all over Ireland, it's hard to choose which one to go to for a golf vacation in Ireland. But then again, there are usually some that stands out from the rest, just like the Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club.
Proudly the last golf course the legendary Irish golf course designer Eddie Hackett designed, the Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club built a links like course that needed about 250,000 tons of sand. Sadly though, Eddie Hackett never saw the end of the construction as he died before it could be finished. A new designer was hired to oversee the construction. The change designs that he did resulted to poor reviews when the course was opened in 1998. The owners had to reshape and redesign the course under the tutelage of a famous American designer, Ron Kirby.
By 2003, the Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club was leased by Universal Golf Consulting Ltd. And took the reins in developing the course and making it more playable and constructing a new clubhouse. This led to the success of the club attracting more members and visitors. With the developments made, the Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club is now recognized by the Irish PGA as one of 5 tournament fixtures in the calendar of the professional tournaments.
The course's concept was to provide a venue where in professional and seasoned golfers could enjoy a challenging round of golf but would be played by beginners and novices as well. The course should also be able to host championship tournament games as well. The Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club has succeeded in doing so and this is founded by the scores of people who come every year and the number of tournaments held there.
Sandwiched by amazing views like the Kenmare Bay below it and the Caha Mountains and MacGillycuddy Reeks towering over it, the Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club has a course that can calm the most troubled souls.
Aside from the course, the Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club also has world class amenities and facilities like a newly redecorated all-inclusive clubhouse, a practice driving range, and a fully stocked pro house where you can find all your golfing needs and souvenir items.
Choosing and finding a golf vacation spot in Ireland could seem to be a very daunting task, but with a little research and taking the time to see what each has to offer, you can definitely picture yourself teeing off amidst Ireland's great natural beauty and the warm welcome of the Irish people.

Imagine there is a line drawn from the toes of your rear foot to the toes of your front foot and continuing on down the fairway. This is the path to which you are aiming your shot. If you're looking for some good golf swing drills to practice this is a good one, place a club or broom stick across the front of your feet and step away to see where you've aimed your shot. Most beginner golfers realize that they weren't aimed where they wanted at all. The best fix for this is to pick a point 120-240 in front of you that is in line with where you want to aim. Square your stance up to that point rather then trying to aim for a spot one hundred or more yards down the fairway. This will drastically improve your accuracy and allow you to concentrate more on hitting the ball well.

Playing The Game
Mechanical thoughts, especially during the backswing, have no place on the golf course. Swing issues and technical moves should be worked out on the practice range. On the course, focus on positive downswing thoughts like accelerate through impact and finish with the right shoulder toward the target. Avoid negative thoughts by visualizing the ballflight you're trying to produce, and swing with that image in mind. A consistent preshot routine helps.

Use Your Golf Swing Training Aid Consistently And You Will See Results
By: Mike Pedersen
Every golfer has a swing fault he or she fights for their entire golfing career! This is a true statement among 80% or more of the golfing population. The consistent use of a golf swing training aid, that is specific to your swing fault will do wonders to your golf swing and performance.
Please remember this!
Any training aid for golf needs to be specific to your golf swing fault. Not your golfing buddies. Not your own swing instructor. Specific to YOUR swing fault!
I am a firm believer in a total golf performance improvement program, and using training aids is part of the program. You see...training aids can help you work on a specific swing fault and groove the correct move to cure it. If you're a slicer, you need to correct a certain move in your golf swing. Same with a hook ball hitter, topper, thinner, etc.
Unfortunately there are hundreds of products on the market promising the world but never delivering. Don't fall into the "hype trap!" These companies pay thousands of dollars to marketing specialists who will hit every hot button on your body.
With that being said, you need a combination of a golf swing aid and improving your body's physical ability via golf strength and stretching exercises. This is the ultimate combination for long-term golf success.
If your body has physical limitations, it will be difficult to successfully train with your new training aid and see results. Your body will resist what the training aid wants it to do. And example of this is taking a lesson. How many times have you taken a golf lesson, your pro tells you to make a bigger backswing and you can't?
The same goes with a golf training aid. You can use it all you want but if your body is resisting the proper mechanics, it will never achieve this new movement for optimal golf swing mechanics.
Once you've realized you need to work on your body, and you've purchased the right training aid for you, there is only one thing left.
Use it regularly!
The ONLY way you are going to see results is if you make a conscious effort to work with you new swing aid on a regular basis. I'm not talking about once every couple of weeks when the wind is blowing right that day! I'm talking about doing it daily for the first few weeks to ingrain your new swing moves.
If and only if you take this approach will you see results!
So many times I hear of golfers buying some training aid or new whiz-bang club, but never using it, therefore wasting their money. Don't you do that! If you don't use it, you won't see results! End of story!
Be the small percent of the golfing population on a mission to make use of your new golf swing training aid. In the long run, you will be the one walking of the 18th tee with a smile on your face!

Personal club fitting should you get clubs to be made just for you or are "off the rack" ones OK? The answer depends on you. If you find clubs which seem to feel good and you can hit the ball well with them, then off the-shelf ones are fine. If nothing seems to work right for you, consider having your clubs personally sized and weighted at shops which specialize in tailoring clubs for the individual. But find out the details on their policy for club returns or replacement in case you have any problems.
Carry your golf clubs with distinction with a new Callaway golf stand bag!
Hitting the ground before the ball, or "fat shots" is a very common problem that can lead to injury. This is caused by either coming into the ball too steeply, and/or decelerating the club head as you hit the ball. Proper weight shift is important and keeping your right shoulder back on the downswing (opposite for left handers) is crucial. There is a tendency to throw the right shoulder ahead as you come down creating an outside in steep club path. Focus on swinging more around your body to remedy this. A good drill is to strap your upper arms to your body and hit balls. This makes it impossible to throw the shoulder forward. Don't forget to accelerate through the ball. When you slow down at the bottom of your swing, you will hit it fat every time.

Golf Putting Tips For Beginners
By: Jasmine Ong
If youre a beginner, learning the basics of golf putting can be like playing in a one-man band. You have to successfully blend different styles, processes and elements together into one harmonious golfing symphony.
Since your posture and stance can affect how well you putt, the first thing to consider is the way you stand. To execute the ideal putt, your arms and shoulders should be left to do majority of the work. Because stooping prevents you from swinging your arms freely, it is important for you to stand tall and with your legs slightly astride. Some experts suggest that you to spread your feet apart no greater than the width of your hips. This will ensure greater balance and mobility as you take your swing.
Once youve adopted the right posture, finding the best position for the golf ball can make all the difference. As a general rule, the ball should be close to you, enough to make it nearly parallel to the tip of your nose. This allows you to swing at it without over-stretching your arms. The ball should also be positioned towards your stances left of center so that it can connect squarely with the putters clubhead.
How you grasp the putter also determines your putting success. Clutching it in a stranglehold could throw your swing off. By holding the club lightly in your hands, you will be able to swing it with greater comfort and ease. Therefore, your grip should, in effect, be more of a relaxed non-grip. For best results, you should treat the club as an extension of your hands.
Restraint is another element that is vital in putting. Many beginners equate golf with powerful swings. But if you take a wild whack at a ball, the odds are great that it will fly off into the not-so-distant horizon. And that is not what a good putt makes.
A putt, by definition, is a light and gentle stroke meant to cause the golf ball to roll straight into the hole. Without restraint, those light and gentle strokes wont be easy to accomplish, let alone master. Putting, therefore, requires a lot of discipline and control. Keep in mind that your objective is to make the ball roll not fly. If you can muster Zen-like calm with each putt, then so much the better.
Another key element in putting is where you set your sights. You should keep an eye on the ball before you make your swing. But you must also take care to keep your head perfectly still during and moments after your stroke. No matter how slight, any unnecessary movement while swinging could throw your aim off and ruin your putt. Instead of physically tracking it, make it a habit to visualize the balls path in your minds eye.
Above all, practice. Whether youre swinging on the greens or putting into a cup set on a carpeted floor, practice, practice, practice. Experiment with different speeds and distances. Set goals as to the number of balls you can sink in succession and then gradually increase your limit as you improve. Take note of the techniques that bring you the most excellent results.
By constantly challenging yourself and refining your methods, youll eventually discover the rhythm that works best for you. Once you have that down pat, youll be able to compose and orchestrate a symphony of putting perfection.

A proper divot is taken just beyond impact, but it should be shallow. Shallow divots allow you to hit your clubs consistent distances, while deep ones don't.

Level Legs
The lack of traction in bunkers forces the legs to function differently than they do on full shotsthey must maintain their flex during the entire swing instead of posting up through impact. This will keep you nice and level through the shot.

James Lawton: Westwood grasps nettle by abandoning comfort zone in pursuit of major glory
Tue, 15 Jul 2008 00:00:01 +0100
<p>No one is saying there should be cries of "You the man" and, worse still, "In the hole", every time Lee Westwood strikes the golf ball at Royal Birkdale later this week. But then on the other hand it is a long time since a British golfer, or most any other kind of sportsman for that matter, has been so entitled to some enthusiastic support from his own people. This hasn't always been the position taken here. Indeed, there have been times when Westwood has not exactly done an immense job in banishing the belief that since Nick Faldo went grumping off into the rest of his life we have been singularly short of a golfer to compete truly at the highest level of the game.</p>

Practice swings How many should you take? One or two to find the bottom of your swing and get loose. Take any more than that and the foursome behind you will start to roll their eyes and wish they were in front of you instead of behind!

To check to see if the wrists are in the proper position that was mentioned above, swing the club half-way back about hip-level high with the clubshaft in the position horizontal to the ground. If the left wrist is in this flat position the clubface will be parallel to the target line, or the toe of the club will be pointing vertically towards the sky. Half-way through the forward swing with the shaft horizontal to the ground again the clubface should be parallel to your target line or toe facing upwards towards the sky. In these positions the left wrist has remained in the flat position throughout your entire swing which translates into a solid straight shot on line to your target. Finally, remember that any attempt to hit the ball with your hands will force the wrists out of position, and the cause them to break down which results in wayward shots.

About the author
To a beginning golfer hitting a golf ball seems easy until they try it. Golf can be a sometimes frustrating, and time-consuming game to learn. My recommendation is that players practice patience by not hurrying to the golf course to learn how to play. Do your learning on the practice range where your mind will not be on scoring, but on learning.
How does a player cultivate the proper length of backswing? We are all individuals and our muscle coordination is not the same, therefore it would be foolish to try to force the club to a parallel position at the top of the backswing. Trying to take the clubhead to parallel will not only shorten your distance it will wreck your accuracy as well. So returning to the earlier premise:The club should not go back any further than you can turn your shoulders.

Villegas makes a name for himself with 'funky' finish
Sat, 19 Jul 2008 00:00:01 +0100
<p>That Camilo Villegas feels entirely at home in the limelight was clear to everyone who witnessed his startling finish in the second round of the Open here yesterday. What remained hidden to all the admiring eyes, however, were his fears of the potential cost of such fame. In Colombia, celebrity has a price. A terrible price, in many instances.</p>
